Musician Marilyn Carino‘s journey somewhat goes in the way of the prodigal son. A Bensonhusrt native, Carino left the Big Apple as soon as she could—the week after she graduated high school, to be exact—and didn’t return until 1998. Since then, Carino has dedicated her time and talents to becoming the quintessential musician that makes this city worth living in.

 

Her sound is melodious, with just enough quirk to affectionately mirror the eclectic ebb & flow of the creative pond that is New York City. Carino’s new album, Leaves, Sadness, Science, is a rabbit hole that leads into a burrow of wonderfully warped vibrations and serene cries. Listeners will be even more delighted to know that all the instruments heard on the album are played by Carino herself and it also features Mike Mills of R.E.M.

 

The focus single, “When the Innocent Go to War,” is lurking and hypnotic. For the visuals, Carino collaborated with artist Elīna Špura. Carino stares unflinchingly into the camera with double crossed eyes while Špura’s animations chime in accordingly.

 

Leaves, Sadness, Science is set to be released on April 14th 2015. An album release celebration will be held the same day at Ward-Nasse Gallery (178 Prince Street) from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.
